How do I enter my Name and Unit conventions properly?

Unit Naming Conventions

Military Link was established so that you may locate and contact military friends past and present. We use some basic naming conventions in order to maintain uniformity and limit duplication. We ask that you use the following guidelines while submitting registration information.

  1. We don't write the words BATTALION in the unit name. (an example would be: D CO 2ND BN)
  2. Enter the highest recognizable unit designation. (i.e. COMPANY or SQUADRON level and above)
  3. Attempt to name your unit in the following format: (B BTRY 1-158 FA; VA-125; VMFAT-101 etc.)
  4. Try to eliminate extraneous qualifiers like PLATOON, SQUAD or DEPARTMENT.
  5. We have done some abbreviating so that: Instructor becomes INSTR.
  6. All unit entries should be capitalized. (example: MATSG-901 NATTC; C CO 3-123 AVN; SVC BTRY 3RD HOW BN 37TH ARTY etc.)
  7. Do not enter the installation or ship name in the unit block unless there is no alternative.
  8. When adding a city/town name use the Title format (i.e. Montgomery, USS Duncan, etc.)
  9. When adding a ship or vessel name use Uppercase format (i.e. USS NIMITZ, USS DUNCAN, etc.)
  10. The first letter of your first and last name are capitals, the rest of the letters are lower case (ie John Smith)

Iif you don't see your unit name where you expect it to be located in the directory, take a little time to search the possible alternatives. Send us a note if you see places where we've erred. We appreciate whatever help we get in trying to make this directory the most useful it can be.

What if I have more than one Duty Station?

It is quite uncommon to be assigned to the same Duty Station for an entire military career. Therefore, you are welcome to register yourself in each Duty Station which you were assigned. Our objective is not to build official Duty Station affiliation lists, but to help you reconnect with old friends. Each additional Duty Station requires registration and is Totally Free. Registering each of your Duty Stations allows you E-Mail access to all people registered at that Duty Station.

Members who find friends in other Duty Station lists can use a feature we call Mail Call to contact them. Just click on the words "send mail" near your friend's name and our mail writer will open, allowing you to compose a brief contact note.
